In the state of California, it is unlawful for merchants to allow the purchase of alcohol at a self check-out terminal.  This creates long lines for one or two open full service lanes which stresses out the cashiers, creating hostile cutomers, as well as clogging parking lots due to the lack of flow of turnover patrons.

Many other states allow you to purchase alcohol at the self check-out terminals, it simply flashes for the overseer to verify a valid ID to complete the purchase.  There is no reason that California, a leader in being ahead of the curve and progressive in nature, should be dragging their feet on a simple issues that would greatly speed up and improve numerous people's quality of life.
