Crab Creek Conservancy started this petition to Mayor, City of Annapolis Gavin Buckley and

Dear Mayor Buckley, Director Nash, and Mr. Smith,

I am writing to you to express my opposition to the Village at Providence Point development. This project would destroy over 27 acres of forest land in a city that cannot afford to lose any additional forest acreage. Crystal Spring Farm and Forest is one of the last, best places in the city of Annapolis. It is home to beautiful wet meadows and abundant wildlife, and it provides many ecosystem services in the form of carbon sequestration, clean air, and clean water for the entire area. These benefits extend well beyond the property boundaries, as the impacts of developing this site would also extend well beyond its footprint, harming the water and air quality for the Annapolis Peninsula and the South River.

These impacts to our community will be unacceptable. Some would have you believe that they have been adequately mitigated, but the devil is the details. While on paper some plans may look good, the fact remains that traffic, runoff, and pollution will all increase. The developers' Forest Stand Delineation and Wetlands Assessment are faulty, omitting important wetland sites and biodiversity. The wildlife assessment in particular is very cursory, with only a few hours of data collected. Planting trees will not replace the mature forest that is currently there, and it will also have the effect of eliminating the diverse old field and wet meadow habitats currently on site by turning them into a plantation.

Crystal Spring Farm and Forest should never have been slated for development but rather protected in perpetuity as open space. The city should be investing in and restoring brownfields for large-scale development instead of destroying open space. Please reject the proposed project and protect the forest at Crystal Spring.

Thank you,
