Gators Matter Period

On average menstruating people have their period from three to seven days and menstruate from age 13 until age 51. That means they endure some 456 total periods over 38 years, or roughly 2,280 days with their period — 6.25 years of their life.
So its no wonder that periods are expensive. Because there are no free tampons or pads at the University of Florida, students are often forced to go home early or skip class completely when their cycle starts unexpectedly. An impoverished student faces the choice between getting a meal and being comfortable, and that shouldn't happen on our campus.
We want the University of Florida to provide its students with the necessary menstrual care items, just like it provides ponchos, condoms and hammocks for its students. Providing these items would eliminate a barrier to a students' ability to study and excel academically.
Because we are a number 9 university, we should be leading by example. Other universities who have already brought free tampons and pads to their campus include:
-University of Wisconsin
-New York City Public schools/institutions
Implementing an initiative like this on campus would make our school a more inclusive community, demonstrating that we care about the comfort, accessibility, and education of over half of our student body. As our campus becomes more inclusive and accessible, our students will feel more comfortable, safe, and happy. We can also remove a barrier for our students.
