The proposed changes to traffic lanes at the southern end of the Tyne Bridge are being enacted without proper consultation and will increase congestion and pollution, not minimise it.

Most worryingly, traffic coming along Askew Road will be forced to either go through Gateshead town centre, via the Civic Centre, or over the Redheugh Bridge and through Newcastle City Centre, thereby causing further congestion and pollution.

The closure of Gateshead flyover northbound will force all traffic onto the lower level, causing queues at both roundabouts, while also impinging on the flow of traffic from the Felling Bypass towards the Tyne Bridge. The current filter system of the two roads at the foot of the flyover also works very well. The roundabout where the felling bypass joins underneath the flyover was never designed to handle large volumes of traffic from two different directions.

These actions are a step too far. They will not only create additional congestion and pollution, they will also inconvenience many local people while offering zero advantages to anyone.
