Give the Seniors a proper graduation.

Dear Dr. Stout,
After your recent announcement about the school’s plans for our graduation, we as the Senior Class came together to discuss our thoughts on it. While we understand the difficult situation the Governor’s orders put you and the administration in, we do not believe that the proposed compromise is palatable to us as a class. After spending much of our time at Gaston Christian School (some as long as kindergarten and others as recently as last year), we want the opportunity to celebrate our invested time and effort together in a longer format, not in individualized, shortened segments that will be clipped together. We believe that there are many alternatives that still allow us to have a proper graduation and still comply with the government’s orders.
For example, the administration of Clover High School is hosting their graduation at a drive-in movie theatre, allowing families to still socially distance themselves in their cars. This idea allows students to still have some semblance of a normal graduation.
A more personalized option to the situation of our school would be a graduation on the soccer field, with spaced out seating and other safety precautions. This idea would limit attendance to family and GCS alumni. If nothing else, we could simply postpone graduation until after the Governor’s stay-at-home order is lifted, which should occur on May 22 if his guidelines are met. If it is possible to have a party during the summer to celebrate the careers of our Principals, it is most definitely possible to have a graduation to celebrate this Senior Class.
While we understand that this is not an exhaustive list of solutions, and none of them are ideal, we believe these are better options that we as Seniors could understand. We hope and pray that you will take our concerns seriously.
