On Monday, May 3rd, a fight occurred in a game between the New York Rangers and the Washington Capitals. The fight broke out and player Tom Wilson (Capitals) behaved in a way that is extremely dangerous to other players. He punched player Pavel Buchnevich (Rangers) in the head several times before he moved on to player Artemi Panarin. He brutally slammed Panarin's head into the ice several times, and all the while, Panarin had no helmet on. Then, right before the referees ended the play, he pushed Panarin to the ground and let his (Wilson's) skate dangle inches away from Panarin's neck. The only punishment Wilson received was a $5,000 fine and a 10 minutes misconduct penalty. Panarin also received an injury, which Rangers coach David Quinn confirmed was from the incident. As a St. Louis Blues fan, I have no sentimental take on this, but I truly believe that what Tom Wilson did was seriously wrong. Wilson has been playing in the NHL for almost 9 seasons, and he's already received five suspensions for similar reasons. So why is this different? And why can we, the fans of the NHL, not rely upon the Commissioner and his underliers to do their jobs! I am petitioning to get Tom Wilson a suspension. Even if the Commissioner of the NHL (Gary Bettman) and the Head of the Department of Player Safety (George Perros) won't willingly do their job, we will pressure them to.
