Allow public access to the Darwin River Dam Catchment

The Darwin River catchment is located in the rural suburb of Darwin River and has been a popular area to many members of the public. Until recently, the management of the dam, Power and Water, have permanently closed the dam off to the public. This has disrupted the frequent activities of walkers, picnic users and tourists who enjoy using the dam.
It is important to these people, especially the local walkers, that the dam remains open as they enjoyed to frequently use the dam due to the steep elevations and beautiful sights to maintain regular exercise, as it is conveniently close and the gym is very far away. It was also important that they were able to do this activity in a safe environment, on sealed secure paths and away from the potential danger of being hit by vehicles.
There are multiple dams which are open to the public all over Australia, as well as Manton Dam in the NT.
Power and Water claim the reason they have permanently closed the dam is due to the fear of 'terrorism', the fear that someone could deliberately contaminate the water supply. If a person had these intentions, there are other access points to enter the dam through back tracks which many members of the community are aware of, therefore permanently closing the dam would not prevent this act of 'terrorism' from occurring.
If we can gather together as a community and change these rules, the wider community will be able to effectively use the dam to engage in these activities once again, so please sign this petition!
