Molly’s Petitioners started this petition to Village of Garden City / Garden City Mayor + Board of Trustees

In the past year, multiple fires have occured in the town of Garden City, beginning in September 2020 with a terrible fire that destroyed the Olcott family home, situated a block from the station house of the Garden City Fire Department. In December 2020 another home was destroyed by flames, another family, though able to escape, who suffered through a lost home, a displaced life. Over this year, these incidents have attracted the attention of the Garden City community, notably following a debate within the past several years and a decision to forgo a professional firefighter force in favor of an all-volunteer outfit.  Within these last weeks, this issue has amplified to one of grave concern. On May 6, 2021, another fire ravaged through another home in our community. This time the losses were not material only. Three members of our village lost their lives this time, including a young senior at our GCHS, Molly. As before, we know calls were made for help. As before, we know help came too late. A mother, a father, and especially a beautiful young daughter, our friend and classmate, lost forever and gone too soon.

We, the undersigned members of this student community, advocate for immediate change in response to this tragedy. We, the undersigned members, no longer feel safe in our homes at night, and we stand strong with our Molly to give voice to a position that is merely reasonable and prudent. Molly would want no one else to suffer this horrific fate. We are not interested in the politics of this issue. We are not interested in the deliberations, nor in feelings that may be hurt or offended by what we have to say. We are calling upon the leadership of this community to stand up, and stand with Molly and with us, to promote and preserve the welfare of our homes and our families. We do not know if professional firemen would have saved Molly, nor the next family or home that is ablaze. But no one can say, however, that real pros, on staff at all hours in our firehouses, would not have saved these homes and, most importantly now, these lives. When human lives are on the line and at stake, we need professionals. Again, simply and reasonably, when our lives are on the line and at stake, we the young people of this community need professionals on call 24/7 who can quickly and expertly come to our aid. How many more lives will be lost before needed change is made? How many more homes will be lost?

Garden City needs to stand with Molly and the Madigan family. We, the undersigned members of this community, stand up and demand change for our Molly!
