The goals of my petition are to raise awareness of smoking in Jackson Heights’ community. As a member of this society, I noted that there were many people who loiter around shops and smoke. In a survey I conducted, I noticed that many agreed with my thoughts that smoking was a major issue in Jackson Heights. Smoking is hazardous to health as cigarettes have many toxic chemicals in them. According to statistics, in 2015, 14% of the current residents of Jackson Heights were smokers. Despite it being low percentage wise, 14% is a lot in population. As a result, I set my goal to be a reduction in the number of smokers around my block while also raising awareness of the issue. Many people suffer from secondhand smoking, in fact, secondhand smoking accounts for about 10% of all tobacco-related deaths. By signing this petition, you support solutions such as:
> Raising awareness about smoking to protect people from tobacco
> Starting up a quit center as most people want to quit but don't have the support they need to

> Implement more anti-smoking laws or a ban on smoking (if not these, raise taxes on cigarettes) etc.

I target this petition toward my district representative to show that there is a concern for this issue and that it should be addressed and possibly prioritized due to its impacts on public health.
