Whilst I agree it is fair to pay a penalty for neglecting to buy a ticket, or returning to vehicle after ticket has expired, clamping fees in Galway are extortionate, and going into the hands of a private company, not to improving our city. APCOA have a complete  monopoly on private parking areas in Galway and charge €125 clamp release fee at the Long Walk in Galway, and €60 in other locations in the city. Whilst this is within the legal limit, it is a totally immoral amount of money to charge. The meter at the Long Walk does not take cards or notes, coins only. It is designed to trap tourists and locals alike. They have clamped people with legal tickets that have blown off the dashboard. I was also clamped when their app was not working , despite customer services assuring me my parking was covered. I still have received no response to my appeal, even though I have evidence of calling them before the clamping. The man who came to remove the clamp told me he wished he could clamp more people as he gets commission.  They run parking at the university and are notorious for barely allowing the grace period for expired tickets. Please ask Galway City council and the National Transport Authority to regulate APCOA better and reduce the clamping charges. It is a huge deterant to tourism, shopping in the city etc.
