Rename Gainesville Regional Airport to "Tom Petty-Gainesville Regional Airport"
This petition had 1,106 supporters
Tom Petty is the epitome of "Americana" and is very much a culturally significant figure. He was the John Lennon of my time. Gainesville is the birthplace of Mr. Petty and it would be fitting for Gainesville to reflect its pride in its cultural export by renaming the airport as such. Several cities and airport authorities have renamed their facilities after their native entertainers - Liverpool (John Lennon), Burbank (Bob Hope), Warsaw (Frederic Chopin), Orange County (John Wayne), New Orleans (Louis Armstrong), and several others. I think that Gainesville should honor it's native son by naming the airport after him, either by what is suggested in the title of this petition, or "Tom Petty Field". We need to let the legendary Tom Petty sign one more autograph - his name on the airport of the city that he put on the map.
