Amendment pursuant to Section VII(B) of the Agreement Between the Towns of Adams and Cheshire, Massachusetts, with Respect to the Formation of a Regional School District, to allow the Town of Cheshire to fund continued operation of the Cheshire School without contribution by the Town of Adams, notwithstanding any provision in the agreement regarding apportionment and payment of costs incurred by the district, which provisions shall be considered amended consistent with this petition. This petition is for an emergency amendment to our district agreement. It will allow Cheshire Citizens to self fund our school without any additional cost to the Town of Adams. We are asking for a special town meeting to vote as a community to keep our school open. Please sign and join us in our fight to fund Cheshire Elementary School. All signatures must be from registered voters in the Adams Cheshire Regional School District.
Cheshire Elementary School is the heart of our community and the future of our town. Without our children, our community cannot prosper and grow. It was decided by our school committee that Cheshire Elementary would be closed for good and all students would be bused to C.T. Plunkett. This was decided by a board of 4 Adams committee members and 3 Cheshire committee members. We now have a chance to correct this mistake that was made at that meeting.
There are so many reasons why we need to fight for our school as a community. There will be many unfortunate repercussion to our town if we lose our community school. Here are some of the reasons this closure will impact our community, the town of Cheshire. Our property taxes will be affected by this closing along with added building costs for an empty building. Studies conclude that a community without a school loses population faster. If residents move out of our town, that will have a very negative ripple effect in many other unthinkable areas. These areas are homes for sale (with a new assessed decreased value without a school), you will not be able to sell your house for it’s true worth. This will leave us with an aging population which in turn will not help our community to grow and prosper.
Studies show that moving 6th grade to the high school has long term effects on students that can last up until 10th grade. There are drastic drops in their scores in mathematics and language arts. These studies also state that there is a higher percentage of absentee students and a higher drop out rate. If you look at our MCAS scores they drop in 6th grade and do not rebound until 10th. Why would we bring our 4th and 5th grade students to the high school? Prospering students come from a school configuration of Prek-6 and Prek-8 campuses. We need to make the best possible decisions for our children. Lets start by keeping their school.
