As outlined by Furman University, the LiveSafe app serves to keep students safe by giving them an option to report incidences where they feel threatened or in danger. It also provides ways for students to contact emergency services, examine the safety map, and request a safe walk to a particular destination. In nature, this app is a very healthy and successful opportunity for students to feel safe on campus. With no ill-intentions, Furman has endorsed this app and its services to protect its students. However, the app is, by in large, utilized for ruthless tattling on peers and promotes a great deal of immaturity. As directed by Furman staff and officiants, students are supposed to resort to their Residential Assistant for complaints about noise, potential violations of the handbook, and personal matters. However, students have been using the LiveSafe app to make these types of complaints, which defeats a large portion of the purpose of having a Residential Assistant and has largely caused the Furman police to waste their time showing up for issues that could have easily been resolved by the Residential Assistant. It is the Residential Assistant's job to call the police for serious issues and violations, and they will do this when circumstances require so. An abolishment of the 'anonymous tips' service on this app will serve to encourage the utilization of the Residential Assistant's abilities, allow the Furman Police to take care of matters only when it is required for them to do so, and will discourage students from participating in immature tattling behaviors. In regards to more serious issues such as reporting cases of rape or violence anonymously, other potential options for this could be implemented in place of the current anonymous tips service. The negative behaviors that the anonymous tips services creates, as aforementioned, should not be endorsed by the school or encouraged for students to take away with them from Furman. As adults, we should handle situations as instructed to do so, so that we can learn to be mature in the real world. The features of the LiveSafe app that should be encouraged are those that allow students in severe danger to speak up and get help, not the features that allow 'anonymous tips' about peers. The 'anonymous tips' service was implemented originally with only good intentions, but due to how it has been misused, change should occur. Ultimately, by getting rid of the 'anonymous tips' service on the LiveSafe app, students will learn important life lessons regarding maturity, actively use their Residential Assistants, and allow the Furman Police more time to handle legitimate and serious issues.
