We, as a diverse group of gay, bisexual, transgender, two spirit individuals, health educators, activists, people living with HIV, and members of diverse LGBT communities, support the Montana Gay* Men's Task Force and FDH & Associates in their proposal to provide HIV/STD prevention services in Montana. (For the purpose of this document, gay* is inclusive of gay, bisexual, two spirit, transgender, queer, gender non-conforming, men having sex with men (MSM) and men loving men.)
For over 25 years, FDH & Associates and the Montana Gay Men’s Task Force have brought forth powerful new ideas that have helped to create a new generation of leaders and individuals committed to the broad health of gay, bisexual, two spirit and transgender men. They have been at the forefront of providing services for gay* men through health retreats, summits, workshops, trainings, support groups, internet and peer outreach, HIV+ retreats, newsletters, condom distribution, advocacy, social media and HIV rapid testing and counseling. They have represented and advocated for gay men's health not only locally and at state meetings, but regionally and nationally at conferences.
As such, national organizations, federal agencies, two spirit societies and LGBT groups acknowledge Montana as a leader in developing community health programs for gay, bisexual, two spirit, and transgender individuals.
Our support also honors the spirit and traditions of those that have come before us. Especially the Montana gay men that died during the early years of the HIV epidemic and helped create health programs and education programs when none existed. Gay men that faced discrimination, bullying, assault, and family rejection, yet relied upon their own strengths and resiliency to not give up and instead lend voice to the health and community needs of gay men. We recognize that gay men have always been instrumental in the creation and implementation of effective and successful interventions targeting our communities. We aim to build upon this rich history by creating a strong, diverse, and increasingly visible grassroots effort among gay, bisexual men, and two spirit and trans individuals, focused on strengthening our communities.
