Why this petition matters

On Friday, June 12, 2020, at 10:30 PM, police received a call to a Wendy's in Atlanta where a car was blocking the drive-thru. In the car was 27-year-old Rayshard Brooks. He was asleep in his vehicle. Police say that Brooks failed a sobriety test.

Prior to arresting him, an individual recording the incident noted that police spoke to Brooks for 20 minutes. Police allege that a "struggle" ensued upon attempted arrest, and thereafter, a taser was deployed against Brooks. Some who witnessed the event have stated that Brooks eventually grabbed for and was in possession of the officer's taser. On video, it shows that Brooks grabbed the taser and ran. From there, two officers chase after Brooks, and the sound of three gunshots being fired is heard. Brooks was eventually taken to the hospital, where the Georgia Bureau of Investigation reports that he died in surgery.

In one recording of the event, following the shooting, an individual is heard demanding answers for why the officers shot Brooks. "I saw you all talking to him for 20 minutes," the person recording says, addressing an officer standing nearby. "Unarmed. Non-violent. Nothing wrong with how he conducted himself whatsoever, and you pull a fucking gun dude?"

This is a call to demand that these officers be charged with the murder of Rayshard Brooks. Black people are continually being picked off by police, and this is no exception. A call for alleged drunk driving and "resisting arrest" is no reason to shoot a man dead. It is clear from these continued events that Atlanta police do not, and will not, respect Black lives. It is time for a systemic overhaul, and Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms must take a hard stand. No justice, no peace.
