I remember being really, really excited for my first FSU football game as a freshman. I mean who isn’t, right? Football games are the lifeblood of the college experience. Although I was never a particularly big fan of football, it was fun to dress up with my friends and cheer on the ‘Noles—at least until I got to the stadium. When I found my seat in Doak, I realized peanuts were littering all over every inch of the ground. I had to apologize to my friends and leave immediately. Now, as someone who’s had a peanut allergy for the past nineteen years, I’ve learned to deal with the difficulties of my condition. I know the world can’t stop just because I can’t be around peanuts. But, on the other hand, I really want to go to a football game. And I think other food allergy suffers would too.

Plenty of major league sporting events offer peanut-free buffer zones for their food-allergic fans, and I would love to see FSU follow suit. This doesn’t have to be a huge section of the stadium, just enough so peanut allergy suffers can breathe safely without worrying about inhaling an allergen.

I love this school with every fiber of my being, and I really would love to cheer on my team from the seats of Doak with my friends. And I want everyone else with a peanut allergy—from little kids to my fellow college students—to feel safe to do so too.
