Amanda Reed started this petition to Frisco ISD Board

Even though Frisco ISD has 63,737 students and 7,442 staff, they have recorded infections in only 3431 students and 1086 staff. The district has not had to close any campuses due to out-of-control Covid-19 outbreaks.

There is strong scientific support that mask-wearing is an important component of reducing the spread of Covid-19. Mask-wearing and social distancing are supported by the CDC, the WHO, and the Texas DSHS. The CDC provides a good summary of several scientific studies below. These studies show that mask-wearing reduces the chances of Covid-19 transmission by approximately 70%.

Over half of the students in our district have enjoyed attending in-person instruction in Frisco ISD. This instruction has been largely uninterrupted because Covid-19 infections did not spread among campuses. Research and scientific experts tell us that mask-wearing and social-distancing measures have been an important component of our success as a district.

On March 2, 2021 Governor Abbott announced that the mask mandates would be lifted in Texas and that businesses would be allowed to open 100%. This decision has been widely criticized by public health officials and is causing stress and concern among health care providers. In addition, vaccines were only made widely available to teachers a few days ago and are still difficult to obtain. Our teachers are a precious resource and the life-blood of our schools. It is important to note that while Covid-19 infections have affected only 5% of students, they have affected almost 15% of staff. Three beloved staff members in the district have already lost their lives even with masking and social distancing measures in place. Requiring staff to work in classrooms with unmasked students would almost certainly increase infection rates. The CDC has shown that schools are not major vectors of Covid-19 infections UNLESS mitigation strategies are not being followed.

Following public health guidelines and continuing to wear masks shows that we value the other lives in our communities and schools and that we are willing to take steps to keep them safe. We implore the Frisco ISD to ‘stay the course’ and continue with the methods that have been used with great success all year.
