The Greenview community garden has been a thriving element of Ann Arbor, using school owned land to bring organic vegetables to people, and people together for over 4 decades. Two organizations have colluded to close down the perennial vegetable gardens at the height of a pandemic, a move reflecting the steady force of intolerance (more certain than Einstein's laws) from the not-in-my-backyardigans. All we ask for is a humble fence to guard against deer and woodchucks, but they have determined chicken wire doesn't look right when compared to their sterile lawns.

One posited reason for the closure is transforming space for vegetables into space for native plants. The perennial plots of Greenview abut buckthorn on one side and a meticulously mowed  expanse of grass littered with dying hawthorns on the other. There is no lack of space for natives but the vegetable garden has been shrunken to half its original size under constant pressure from the finicky. The lack of native habitats are a result of bad planning -surrounding sprawl of the NIMBYs- not our dainty perennial garden. The funny thing is those same finicky people with plastic front yards don't seem the type to advocate for the native plant restoration following the garden's disassembly- we believe in restoration of habitat and support native plants wholeheartedly.  The trouble is land use is complicated. At the grocery store you get produce raised unsustainably on land devoid of native plants. By comparison our perennial beds actually support native species and well as a human community.  Perennial community gardens are in line with the city's goals of sustainability and should be supported by the school district and the city—not surreptitiously cancelled.

With your support we can return perennial gardening to Greenview and ensure community growth, mental health  and healing in a time rife with division.
