Boycott Dollar General Store in Basye, Virginia

This petition had 117 supporters

In Mid-April 2017, Shenandoah County held a public hearing on the proposal to build a Dollar General Store in Basye, Virginia. Dozens of locals attended and dozens of locals spoke up, nearly all of them objecting to the plan.  The Planning Commission then vetoed the rezoning plan required to build the store.

So far, so good. But then on April 27, the Shenandoah Board of Supervisors ignored both its citizens and its own Planning Commission by approving the zoning change anyway so that the store could be built. (Note: Thanks to Supervisors John R. "Dick" Neese and Steve Baker, who both voted against the new store.)

Fortunately, the citizens and friends of Basye are not out of options yet.  If you believe that public hearings should actually mean something in a democracy and you're tired of national chains destroying the unique character of small rural towns, please sign up today to announce your boycott of the Dollar General Store in Basye.
