"Team Taylor" has been raising money for Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong for more than 15 years. My daughter, Taylor Colleen Brush, was born with life threatening birth defects on July 7, 1999. She spent her entire 6 1/2 months fighting for her life in the NICU at Strong. After her passing, we wanted to give back to the hospital that did so much for her and for our family and also to help other families in need. In 2002, a plaque went up in the NICU in memory of Taylor due to our fundraising efforts. To date, "Team Taylor" has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the NICU and for the Pediatric Social Work Department.
The new Children's Hospital is being opened in a few weeks. Taylor's plaque is being moved over to the new hospital, however, the wording needs to be changed. It has been determined that "In memory of" will no longer be used in the children's hospital because a "few" people found it offensive. They want to change Taylor's plaque to read, "In honor of" and want to take out the quote, "Each Life is a Miracle that Changes the World." Apparently giving back in memory of a child is offensive to some so it cannot be done anymore.
I do not agree and do not want Taylor's plaque to be changed. I don't think anything about her plaque or her memory is offensive at all. I think that if a family does fundraising for 15 years after LOSING a child, that says a lot about the commitment to the hospital.
The hospital has been doing Radiothons and Telethons for years to raise money. Will it be protocol to not interview families that have lost children because that is offensive? Should families stop raising money in memory of their loved ones and only raise money in honor of those who survived? I guess I don't understand how anyone can be offended by recognizing funds being raised in memory of a child.
I don't know if this will change anything at all because politics are involved but if you agree with me, please consider signing this petition in MEMORY of Taylor and the efforts of "Team Taylor!"
Thanks and much love to you all <3
