Change in Socastee High school dress codes
The Socastee High School dress code is degrading and especially in South Carolina’s heat it is not okay that we should be expected to wear long shorts or pants and to sexualize their students. I shouldn’t have to be body shamed by my school for what I wear. I want to wear what I want and if people in school like teachers have a problem with it that is uncalled for and it’s weird for our teachers to be looking at us like that saying we can’t wear stuff like that. It’s overall degrading and embarrassing to be dress coded and it takes away from women trying to get an education. We should be allowed to wear what we are comfortable and confident in. Telling women they need to cover up since it’s a distraction to men is not acceptable by any means it is 2021 and times have changed, I believe it is a male students issue if they are distracted by what I am wearing. We need to stand against the dress code that puts us down every single day. It’s harmful to women’s confidence and is disrespectful to how much they sexualize their female students. It’s unacceptable to put down female students because of what they are wearing we should be allowed to wear shorts we feel comfortable in especially because of South Carolina’s heat in the summer time. Spaghetti straps are not distracting and there should be no reason for the degradation that happens in this school. I was once dress-coded and told by a female administrator that she wishes “all females I wish we could ban shorts for them specifically because it’s such an issue” A FEMALE staff said this to me, a young student. This type of behavior should not be tolerated. We need other women staff personnel standing up for us and our rights not trying to knock us down or degrade/ sexualize us.
