Brittani Medlock started this petition to Friend of court

Many of us have a history of absence and abandonment of our parents. Whether it may be the mother, the father and for some of us both. In the state of Michigan in most cases, when a parent is absent they are ordered to pay child support. Support for the child! I currently found out from speaking with with the Friend of the Court in Pontiac, MI that even after a child is over the age of 18 (which is considered an adult in the state of Michigan) any support still owed still has to be paid. Which means while us as adults are out on our own providing for ourselves our prior parent and/or guardian is still receiving money from backed up child support the other party owes. Although the child is no longer legally being taken care of by that person. I’m sure we have all had the struggle of becoming a young adult and coming up with our own money to buy a car, pay a car note, paying car insurance, making a down payment on our first apartment or house, college tuition/fees, food, medical bills or even having our own children and financial help for them. This petition is for Michigan to pass a law that any support still being paid after the child is an adult, or out of legal custody of a guardian and taking care of themselves the money should be issued directly to the former child the support order was made for.
