Bring Back Horner Debate Club

Fremont Debate Academy, FDA, is a student run non-profit organization which teaches debate to students in the Bay Area, nationally, and has branches in Mumbai, India. We have taught more than 500 students from grades 4-8. It is a completely student run organization where passionate high school debaters are provided a platform to take leadership and teach elementary/middle school students public speaking skills. These high school mentors are very dedicated to our organization and Parliamentary debate and have more than 2400 service hours logged with FDA. More than 50 volunteers who are nationally ranked debaters teach students to voice their opinions, get involved with political issues, and most importantly learn essential skills that can help students in the real world.

Horner Debate Club, one of the branches, had an amazing season last year and it was a huge success. Fremont Debate Academy was able to revive Horner Debate in the beginning of the year, and we finished the year by being awarded with the Best in the League award and had a team place in the Top 10 at the national tournaments towards the end of the session. We hope that we can reach similar levels of achievement this year, and continue to offer HDC as an opportunity to students throughout our community.

Unfortunately, as of right now, we are having difficulties with the administration allowing us to conduct Horner Debate. There is an alternate program that Horner is offering to students. This is a debate program unlike Horner Debate, which will charge a $500 fee and is also uncompetitive, meaning that participants will not be attending any tournaments.

The only argument the school had against our program was, we didn't have teacher  advisors last year, but we had parent supervisors watching over the students during sessions. This year we also have two teachers on board to help us supervise, but the school is still not allowing us to conduct HDC. We have tried to negotiate with the principal, but after several attempts to reason with her, we are being forced to escalate this issue and start a petition so our voices can be heard.
