The biggest headline these days is the novel corona virus that broke out of Wuhan, China.  This virus is so contageous that the Chinese government has extended the national holiday an additional week, shutdown entire cities, stopped most forms of public transportation, essentially quarantined hundres of millions of people in their homes.  The number of people infected by this virus in China is going up by the thousands and the death toll is going up by the hundreds each day. As of today there are around 17000 confirmed cases.  Hospitals are so full, they are turning away potential patients, asking them to self quarantine at home. This virus has a long incubation period of up to 14 days.  A person infected may not be showing any symptoms at all  and yet can still transmit the disease to others.  This makes this disease hard to diagnose and hard to stop.

The international community is reacting swiftly.  US has barred all foreign persons who have traveled to China in the last 14 days from entering the US starting Feb 2nd.  US citizens who have been in Wuhan are required to be quarantined for 14 days when they return.  US government is even pulling out diplomatic personnels from China.  Many other countries are following suit.

Many majory corporations have also issued travel guidelines eliminate non-essential travel to China and requiring employees who traveled out of china to work from home for 14 days before returning to office.

Even local day care facilities and after school programs have issued similar policies requiring student to stay home for 2 week after returning from China.

Yet, there are reports from student parents that FUSD schools are encouraging students who just returned from trips to China to attend class without quaratine.  Email from the school district says there "no extra precautions recommended at thsi time".  Although this might be reasonable two weeks ago, things have moved so fast that this is no longer considered sound policy that places the health and safety of our children above all.  Shouldn't we provide the greatest protection to the weakest and most helpless members of our community?  Does it make sense for Facebook to protect their employees more than we do of our children?

We, the parents and concerned community members, ask that the FUSD school board to change their policy to encourage if not require students to stay home for 14 days before coming back to class after traveling to China or other regions heavily impacted by the novel corona virus that is sweeping the world.  Many parents want their children to stay home but are afraid that this might negatively impact their children.  This is not about discrimination, this is about safety.  Let's not risk the health of all of our students and our faculty members.  Let the students who have traveled to China to stay home for 14 days before returning to class.
