As of 2019, it has now been 5 years since the tragic passing of local entertainer and multiple Guinness World Records holder Matty Blade.

Matty was famously known by locals and tourists alike for his incredible stunts performed in both Perth and Fremantle as a sword swallowing, chainsaw balancing escape artist pirate, who delighted thousands of people for many years atop his pirate ship. Even today, many local street artists credit Matty as being their inspiration to start doing what they love. Matty even acted at Fremantle Prison during their torchlight tours.

After his passing, there was much talk about the possibility of a memorial plaque or statue to be erected outside the Fremantle markets, where Matty used to perform, however, this never came to pass and the local council opted to acknowledge his passing at the Fremantle Street Arts Festival, in which the MC spoke about Matty prior to the cabaret show, in 2014.

However, Matty's friends and fans have always felt that this was simply not enough and would very much like to see a memorial erected in remembrance of Matty Blade, who was such a key figure in the evolution of the Perth and Fremantle arts scenes. We believe that this would not only be a beautiful way to remember him but would also serve as a tourist attraction for his many fans, both local and overseas, as well as those wanting to learn a little more about Fremantle's extensive history in the arts.
