Freeland Council To Overturn Decision To Purchase Event Center

This petition had 239 supporters

Freeland Borough Council members B. Tulanowski, D. Bobby, E. Appleman, W. Defrancesco, and Kristen Myers voted "yes" to purchasing the Freeland Event Center to be used as the new Borough Building despite an overwhelming disapproval from Borough residents.

The facts are this:
The initial grant is for $500k.
$66k already spent on Engineering fees. The building will be purchased for $185k.
Required renovations: Mechanical-$66k, Plumbing-$82k, Electrical-$69k, and General-$237k.
This leaves a $206k shortfall.
Council is applying for an additional grant in the amount of $175k, however this second grant is not guaranteed.
This leaves an apparent shortfall of approx $30,000 even if the Boro is awarded the second grant.

This estimate is NOT including closing costs or the interest on the short term loan that is planned to be paid off once the first grant is officially awarded. Additionally, once the purchase goes through and until all offices are renovated and moved from the current Borough Building to the Event Center, the Borough will be responsible for maintaining both buildings. There was no timeframe available on how long the renovation process would take.

The Borough Engineer has stated in a public meeting that the Borough should not make this purchase.
