Boycott the Spots: Fight the Parking Fee Increase in Downtown Toms River

This petition had 397 supporters

Beginning on October 1st, the fees to park in Downtown Toms River will increase. These increases amount to $.75/hour in the municipal garage with a 3 hour maximum, and progressively for ALL on street parking. For the first two hours of street parking, the fee is $.50/hour. For each additional hour, the fee increases $.50 ($1.00 for the third hour, $1.50 for the fourth). Parking for 8 hours on the street will cost $14.50. If you like percentages, this will cost you 725% more!

What can you do? BOYCOTT PAYING FOR PARKING IN DOWNTOWN TOMS RIVER STARTING NOW! Believe it or not, you have a say in whether this decision to raise fees is successful! Hit them where it hurts - right in the wallet! By cutting off their revenue stream early, you can show them how ridiculous this greedy increase is - and that you're not willing to tolerate such absurdity.

Consequences and concerns include:

Downtown Toms River businesses will suffer. If you have a wildly successful area, you might be able to get away with a marginal fee increase. If you have a dying area, you need to come up with ways to make it more desirable before charging more for it. It’s in the interest of the parking authority to want to ensure that the Downtown Toms River businesses DO flourish. Because if they don’t – there will be no more Downtown.

People already actively avoid the Downtown area because it is well known that parking is difficult.

The Toms River Parking Authority is revenue neutral. If the only reason for raising the rates is to fund an already ridiculous parking system - what's the point? It sounds like parking should be free.

The so-called free lots are out of the way, and some of them only provide parking for limited amounts of time. These lots have already proven inefficient and are not a solution.

An increase of 725% is greedy.

There is no need for an immediate spot turn over in Downtown Toms River. We should be encouraging potential business patrons to walk around and stick around - not leave in an hour.
