According to CNN, George Zimmerman’s “neighborhood had suffered eight burglaries, all committed by young black men, in the 15 months prior to Trayvon Martin’s shooting.” (Zimmerman supporters say he was protecting neighborhood, retrieved April 12, 2012 from http://articles.cnn.com/2012-04-03/justice/justice_florida-teen-shooting-burglaries_1_burglary-incidents-police-documents-black-males?_s=PM:JUSTICE)

Zimmerman called police to report a suspicious person that matched a description provided for 8 burglaries committed within the prior 15 months.

Zimmerman lost sight of Martin after trying to follow him and was returning to his vehicle when Martin confronted him.

Martin punched Zimmerman and slammed his head on the sidewalk. Officers reported seeing a wound on the back of Zimmerman's head, and surveillance video confirmed an injury to the back of Zimmerman’s head.

“According to police, Zimmerman was bleeding from the nose and had a wound on the back of his head” (Shooting of Trayvon Martin, retrieved April 12, 2012 from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting_of_Trayvon_Martin)

Martin attacked Zimmerman before Zimmerman shot Martin.

Testimony from a witness confirms this claim made by Zimmerman.
"The guy on the bottom who had a red sweater on was yelling to me: 'help, help…and I told him to stop and I was calling 911," he said. Trayvon Martin was in a hoodie; Zimmerman was in red. Trevon Martin is no small boy at 6 feet 3 inches, and a considerable threat if he was in fact on top of Zimmerman, punching him in the face or slamming his head against the sidewalk as Zimmerman and at least one other witness confirm.

This is sufficient reason to shoot.

Zimmerman shot Martin in self-defense.
