On June 10, 2018 the Vietnamese government illegally arrested Will Nguyen, a Vietnamese-American graduate student and Yale University alumnus, for his taking part in a peaceful demonstration voicing the Vietnamese people's concerns about the two proposed bills: one aimed at creating special economic zones that would solidify the establishment of Chinese authority inside Vietnam and one aimed at controlling access to the Internet. Along with many other fellow demonstrators, Will Nguyen was brutally beaten, dragged along the street, jailed, denied legal presentation and likely tortured to force a confession.
The two recent bills are absolutely horrifying to the Vietnamese people to say the least: one is, effectively and indisputably, to cede more land to China, and one to shut up anyone disagreeing with the government. Such horrendous facts are not lost on anyone - including Will Nguyen. As an American, he could have shrugged off, stood idly by and pretended nothing happened during his visit in Vietnam. He chose to make a difference by joining the people of his ancestry to peacefully demand the Vietnamese government to do the very duties that it has sworn to do: defend the country's sovereignty and serve the people.
What the demonstrators did was not only legal and supported by Vietnam’s constitution, but also honorable. How they are being treated is shameful, cruel, and barbaric. In 2015, the Vietnamese government has ratified the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment to gain acceptance by the international community. Three years later, Vietnam has failed miserably its commitment to stop such acts of brutality. In broad daylight, Vietnamese government has severely beaten peaceful demonstrators including a US citizen, Will Nguyen, and has continued its heinous acts within the four walls of its jail.
We, the freedom loving people of the world, hereby demand an immediate and unconditional release of Will Nguyen along with other currently detained demonstrators. Failure to do so only serves to further discredit the Vietnamese government in the eyes of the international community, and more importantly, of the Vietnamese people.
We respectfully ask for your assistance in this cause.
