Free translators for citizenship test
Free translators for citizenship test
Why this petition matters
Immigrants come to America for a better future whether it’s for economic prosperity, religious freedom, or education. They face many hardships, such as prejudice, financial instability, and economic restraints; however, one of the most challenging hardships is the language barrier. According to Pewreasearch.org, 47% of immigrants are unskilled in the English language. This causes a problem for those studying to take the U.S. citizenship test. Without the US citizenship, immigrants aren't able to have the full freedom and opportunities available for citizens. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) requires the test to be in English because “America is an English-speaking country where all official work is conducted in English, it is essential.” (stilte.com). This is an discriminatory disadvantage towards immigrants since they will learn English after living in the US. Providing free translators during testing would allow immigrants who don’t know English to take the citizenship test and pass. Help us urge government officials to make this a reality!
