Bobath Centre started this petition to Sajid Javid MP (Secretary of State for Health and Social Care)

Cerebral Palsy is a neurological condition caused by brain damage around the time of birth. It is the largest cause of childhood disability, affecting 1 in 400 births in the UK.

The National Bobath Cerebral Palsy Centre believes the Government and the NHS should be doing more to support people with Cerebral Palsy. Too many people in England cannot access the specialist therapy they need and lack the funds to pay for private therapy sessions.

Studies undertaken by The National Bobath Cerebral Palsy Centre highlighted that:

  • There's a lack of access to therapy to manage pain: Almost all children and adults with Cerebral Palsy live in pain. Of those, 91% use therapy to manage their pain. Every age group reported therapy as more important for their pain relief than medication.
  • The majority of people with Cerebral Palsy lack access to health services - 59% of adults and 42% children lack access to adequate healthcare services to fully meet their needs.
  • Adults with Cerebral Palsy disproportionately experience poverty & unemployment: 41% of adults with Cerebral Palsy surveyed were unemployed. 23% revealed that they didn’t have enough money to make ends meet or were living month to month.
  • Covid has disproportionately impacted on people with Cerebral Palsy by causing a regression in their physical health through shielding and self-isolation - 59% of adults and 42% of parents of children with the condition reported a regression in mobility.

As Cerebral Palsy is a life-long condition, support is needed throughout a person's life. Yet we know too many people with Cerebral Palsy are isolated, because of poor mobility. Too many live in pain and too many adults live in poverty, with poor mental health.

We are asking you to sign a petition that the NHS should provide free ongoing specialist therapy for people living with Cerebral Palsy in England, to enable them to stay mobile and active, and to manage the pain associated with their condition.
