Free Shimon Aykout — Cyprus Is Breaking Its Own Law
The Issue
A 75-year-old cancer patient. Over 400 days in prison.
For a crime that — under Cyprus’s own law — cannot be prosecuted.
Now, the European Court of Human Rights has ruled TWICE:
Cyprus has a pattern of ignoring its own laws and failing victims.
SECTION 1:
What the European Court Found Cyprus was found guilty in two major human rights cases.
X v. Cyprus (2022):
A young British tourist was gang-raped in Ayia Napa — but she was the one prosecuted.
The Court ruled that Cyprus mishandled evidence, ignored procedure, and violated her rights.
N.T. v. Cyprus (2023):
A 14-year-old girl reported sexual abuse. The police failed to act.
The Court condemned Cyprus for violating its legal duties and protections.
These weren’t just legal mistakes.
They show a system willing to ignore truth when it’s inconvenient.
SECTION 2:
Shimon Aykout’s Case — A Legal Impossibility
Shimon is being wrongfully charged with meritless property crimes.
But those charges violate Law 44/1984 — a law written by Cyprus itself.
Clause 11 of the law says:
“No property-related law can be applied
until the land registry is completed and ownership is confirmed.”
✅ The registry was never completed.
❌ No “registration certificates” were issued.
❌ No one has legal ownership.
So the law says: these charges should not exist.
SECTION 3:
Why This Matters
This isn’t just one case.
It’s part of a systemic failure — now targeting an elderly man with cancer.
The same collapse that failed two young women…
is now failing Shimon.
What We Demand
We call on:
The Government of Cyprus
The Ministry of Justice
European legal bodies
Human Rights observers
Drop the charges. Free Shimon Aykout immediately.
