I never really understood the funding for nursing degrees until my daughter decided to apply.  She was originally thinking of teaching but then during the pandemic having seen the challenges that nurses in the NHS were facing she wanted to ‘give back’ so she decided to apply for an adult nursing course.    She got amazing grades and Oxford was an option but she was adamant that this was her calling.    Initially the £5000 grant given sounded like a great incentive but the reality is she is expected to work 12 hour days as part of her ‘learning’.  This includes giving personal care unsupervised, being vomited on,  sworn at and supporting cleaning patients after they have passed away so their families can see them in a dignified way.  My daughter is 19!   So it’s not really a grant.  It’s being paid less than minimum wage to ‘prop up’ the NHS which is on its knees.  When she finished her course she will be in £27000 worth of debt.   Please join me in highlighting this travesty.  We need to change this. All nursing degrees should be fully funded so we can encourage more talent to take up these essential roles.  Let’s take care of those that will be taking care of us.  Thank you.
