Bring the PTSA back to Sealston Elementary School

Today’s schools are feeling the budgetary constraints more than ever and often teacher’s find themselves having to take on more responsibilities with less funding.  While a Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) won’t fix all budget woes or create more time in a teacher’s day per se – they can provide an additional link to allow parents, teachers and students another venue for communication and involvement.  What a PTSA can also do is raise funds to provide assistance to the school and teachers as well as a greater pool of volunteers to allow the teachers a few more minutes back in their day. There are many ways schools benefit from PTA and there are numerous studies show that students who are a part of a school with a PTA/PTSA perform better than those without.
According to the National PTA website, the PTA is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit association that prides itself on being a powerful voice for all children, a relevant resource for families and communities, and a strong advocate for public education. Membership in PTA is open to anyone who wants to be involved and make a difference for the education, health, and welfare of children and youth. For more than a century, the PTA has provided support for parents, teachers and students and there are so many benefits to having a PTA in our school.

One of the most basic, yet vital is to foster relationships among the parents, teachers and students as well as the community.  Other benefits include assisting parents in being parents – the most difficult and important job in the world. Also, a major benefit to a PTSA is ensuring that our children receive the best education that we can provide and foster their mental, physical and intellectual growth.  A PTSA will assist the school with activities where parental involvement is needed and ensure that the parents receive all of the information they need regarding their children’s education and other activities. Communication is critical to any good relationship and a PTSA provides all parties the ability and  a channel to voice concerns.  There is no such thing as “too much parental involvement” and a PTSA will assist in facilitating that involvement.

We, the undersigned, believe that Sealston Elementary School in King George, Va. will benefit greatly from the presence of a PTSA organization. We seek to be able to re-form the organization within our school and make certain that our students – our children and grandchildren, the future leaders of not only King George but of our Nation deserve to have every available resource to ensure that their scholastic years provide them with every possible asset to succeed.
