The Seafront Oval is an iconic open space accommodating everything from carnivals, events to sporting and fundraising activities. Remember the Yagubi Festivals? Nothing for 6,000 people to attend. The Seafront Oval has a rich history and should be respected.
The events that Seafront Oval have hosted over the years have transformed Pialba and impacted many people's lives, in particular the Butchulla people.
The Seafront Oval was an indigenous corroboree ground and cooking site. It is significant in their lives, where their ancestors would swim from K'gari (Fraser Island) to the corroboree ground. The coolooloi (Cypress Pines) are sacred to them also, as are the girraman (flying fox) of which they have a spiritual connection too.
But the latest development sees a name change from Seafront Oval to 'Pialba Esplanade Park' without advice or consultation.
We the undersigned request Fraser Coast Regional Council return the name 'Seafront Oval' and retain the significant culture and heritage of our iconic space, valued by many.
