The Associated Students of the University of New Mexico (ASUNM) Senate is considering a resolution at their 04/08 ASUNM Senate Meeting to support undocumented immigrant students.
Some Senators in the ASUNM Steering & Rules Committee removed an important line of the resolution to make social security numbers optional for UNM admissions. This is one of the most important issues because UNM applicants aren't informed of their rights to use a paper application or use an alternative number. NM SB582 passed in 2005 makes it against the law in New Mexico for a public college to discriminate against students in admissions or state financial aid because of their immigration status. Many students applying to UNM don't know it's their right to be able to apply to UNM even if the don't have a social security number.
There's an easy fix! Include the line in the resolution to require UNM to make social security numbers optional for the online application. Other universities including the University of California system provide options for students who don't have or don't want to use a social security number. UNM can do the same!
