Cindy Skanderup started this petition to Franklin Village Council

As we aim to improve cell service in Franklin, I want to bring up the issue of safety. Most, if not all of us, are unaware that there are already mini cell towers throughout our neighborhoods atop existing telephone poles, just 20 feet from our homes. As we move forward in connecting our community, let's make sure the Village knows that safety is of equal, if not greater concern to its residents. Science-backed evidence to support the dangers of living in close proximity to cell towers and their radiation are growing.

Current FCC guidelines were established in 1996 - just two years after the public release of smart phones. To say they are outdated, after 25 years of technological change, is an understatement.

In August of 2021, the Federal Court ruled against the FCC for its failure to provide an explanation proving that current guidelines adequately protect against the harmful effects of exposure to radio frequency radiation.

We request that the Village of Franklin initiate the following to ensure the safety of it's residents:

  1. Establish new safety guidelines for installing new cell towers of any kind in residential areas including setbacks and zoning restrictions.

  2. Audit existing towers to ensure compliance with updated safety regulations.

  3. Inform residents of installation plans for new cell towers of any kind.

Cities around the globe are establishing their own protocols for safety around cell towers in residential areas, and we are asking the same of our community. There is a path forward for both updated safety guidelines and improved cell service, so let's work together to make it happen!
