Using mannequins with different body types and different identities is important because it creates a more inclusive campus environment where everyone can feel represented. Having one-size mannequins perpetuates the harmful “ideal” body type and that the clothes on the mannequins will only look as good on a person with that body type. Furthermore, not including mannequins with disabilities further puts people who share that identity in an oppressed position. This affects the students who shop, which could lead to issues around body image and self-esteem as well as not feeling as supported in the UNH community.
