Save Saint Catherine School
Aloha Saint Catherine School Ohana,
Since MaryAnn Bode’s appointment as interim principal in July 2020, there have been countless documented incidences of her verbal abuse, retaliation, and other unethical behavior, primarily targeted at teachers. Our children have experienced the trauma of witnessing their teachers being yelled at and humiliated, and many report being afraid to go to school. MaryAnn Bode’s grossly unprofessional and inappropriate behavior, which stands in stark opposition to the Catholic values we hope to model for the rising generation, has torn our precious community apart.
In November 2020, Father William Tulua took on the role of Vice Principal. In that role, he has subjected teachers to bullying, authoritarian intimidation tactics, and blatant disrespect. His attitude reflects the belief that teachers are worthless and expendable. When a teacher expressed the valid concern that we are at risk of losing more teachers, his reply was “I’ll just hire more.”
This Monday morning, when we returned from Spring Break, the principal announced the abrupt termination of our beloved 4th Grade teacher, Mrs. Elizabeth Sancho, as well as her replacement by a well-intentioned but unqualified 22-year-old college student. The reason for Mrs. Sancho’s firing? Standing up to mistreatment and trying to protect her students.
We are at a crisis point, and the teachers need your help. For the past 9 months, many of them have tried to bring their toxic work environment to the attention of leadership through every appropriate channel, following stated protocols. Desperate pleas to the pastor, Father Anthony Rapozo, the superintendent of Catholic schools, Dr. Llewelyn Young, the head of HR, Dara Perreira, and the Bishop, Larry Silva, have fallen on deaf ears again and again. Several teachers have received little to no acknowledgment and no tangible support whatsoever. This is absolutely unacceptable.
Two teachers, Ms. Margie (Art) and Mrs. Nelson (Library) have already left this year due to MaryAnn Bode’s abusiveness, and at least 10 more are ready to follow if appropriate corrective action is not taken NOW. It is not too late for school leadership to make things right and to restore a healthy learning environment for our staff and students.
- MaryAnn Bode and Father William Tulua must be removed from the SCS Faculty and from campus, effective immediately.
- Mrs. Elizabeth Sancho’s unjust termination must be reversed.
Catholic Schools Hawaii needs to know that we will not tolerate mistreatment of staff on our campus any longer. Please help us protect the children and their teachers from MaryAnn Bode and Father William Tulua, and save St. Catherine School from irreparable damage.
Mahalo for your support.
