The Virginia Tech shooting was the deadliest in US history and a moment I will never forget. I watched the breaking news from my high school classroom in Virginia, learning the horrific details unfolding at a school I was thinking of attending. Sadly, it is a scene that has become all too common.

Mass shootings have become epidemic in the United States. There have been 31 school shootings in America since Columbine.

Research into mass shooting has shown a driving force for shooters is the desire for media attention. It's no secret that national tragedies draw massive amounts of viewers to news outlets, and that the outlets with the most detailed information benefit the most from these surges. It’s time to stop giving these killers the notoriety they seek.

I’m calling on FOX News -- the most watched cable news channel -- to lead the way and make it an official policy not to publicize the names of mass shooters.

After the latest shooting in Oregon, FOX News took a good first step by limiting how often they publicize the shooter’s name. Now FOX News needs to do what news outlets in countries around the world already do and refuse to mention the names of mass shooters.

Not airing shooters’ names wouldn’t deny the public the right to know -- it’s information that would still be available in the public record. We just wouldn’t see their names over and over again in the press. In a moment when it’s hard for the public and our leaders to agree what to do about gun violence, this is a move we can all agree is the right thing to do and could stop some of those motivated by wanting their name to live on in the press.

Please join me in calling on FOX News to lead journalistic standards around mass shootings by officially not reporting the names of mass shooters.
