Demand that Fox News Fire Bill O'Reilly

This petition had 90 supporters

Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly crossed yet another line when he insulted Democratic Congresswoman Maxine Waters in crass racist and sexist terms, stating that he couldn't hear her "over her James Brown wig." However, this was not the only insult. The entire segment was framed in a way that ridiculed and undermined Representative Waters, with O'Reilly suggesting that she "should have her own sitcom." While O'Reilly has apologized for the remark, his apology was less than sincere, and he used his apology to deflect from the fact that he and his Fox & Friends colleagues spent several minutes laughing about her appearance.

O'Reilly has a long history of racist and sexist commentary, and his partisan commentary often misleads the public. In fact, longtime news anchor Ted Koppel has called anchors like O'Reilly and his Fox News colleague "bad for America." At a time when cable news and social media are only exacerbating partisan divides and when racist and sexist speech is rampant, we need to refrain from engaging in hate speech. Firing or suspending Bill O'Reilly is not a violation of his First Amendment freedom of speech, but it would go a long way toward sending a message that partisan media has created an increasingly hostile political environment.
