Liz Trotta has a long history of ignorant, and inflammatory remarks throughout her career in journalism. And every now and then, she crosses the line into degrading, hateful, and utterly inappropriate. Such is the case with her latest controversy on Fox News in which she attempted to address the issue of women serving with men in the military:
Via Huffington Post, Trotta said:
"...the sexual abuse report says that there has been, since 2006, a 64% increase in violent sexual assaults. Now, what did they expect? These people are in close contact..."
Trotta also alleged that "feminists" have demanded too much money to fund programs for sexual abuse victims. "You have this whole bureaucracy upon bureaucracy being built up with all kinds of levels of people to support women in the military who are now being raped too much," she said.
When the Fox host argued that the programs are necessary to protect those victims. Trotta responded that the purpose of the military is "to defend and protect us, not the people who were fighting the war."
Not only does Ms Trotta express that women should "expect" to be raped "too much" (as if there's an acceptable amount?) while serving their country, but that we do not deserve a chance to seek justice after a violent crime is committed against us. According to Ms Trotta, any money spent in support of sexual assault victims in the military is apparently a waste of America's tax dollars, because we (military) are here to protect... "us" (???)... which apparently does NOT include military personnel themselves.
Liz Trotta's statements are disrespectful of all who serve and she should not be given a platform to spread this message. Please sign and tell FOX News to fire Liz Trotta immediately!
It is rare for me to get fired up enough about a topic on any show, news or otherwise, to feel it worthy of my time to bother writing the network. I am typically an, "if you don't like it, don't watch" type of viewer. However, the comments made by Liz Trotta regarding women in the military simply cannot be ignored! As a veteran of the Marine Corps myself, I am highly offended on behalf of all of my brothers in arms whom she just implied are all rapists! The mass majority of men in uniform are upstanding, hardworking, decent men and I was honored to serve alongside them. They would never dare harm any of their fellow service members, male or female. Studies have shown that rapes are committed by a very small percentage of the population. The rates are high because the mass majority of rapists are repeat offenders who will continue to offend until they are convicted and locked away. (And, for her information, females are NOT the only victims! Removing all females would simply up the number of male victims, not solve the problem...)
Rape and sexual assault are a problem in the military NOT because "men are in close proximity to women," but because rape and sexual assault are currently so rarely punished! My putting on a uniform SHOULD NOT equate to my stripping myself of my constitutional rights to seek justice for crimes committed against me. Likewise, donning a uniform DOES NOT excuse crimes committed by other soldiers. It is not a free pass to rape, pillage, and plunder. There should be respect and honor in our services. Children everywhere look up to our soldiers as heroes, and they should be able to feel right in doing so. A rapist has no place in our armed forces. There is no honor or respect in crimes against other persons.
And why blame the person who was victimized? Is she implying that my service is somehow LESS than that of a rapist?? Ms Trotta honestly believes that a rapist makes a BETTER Soldier/Marine/Airman/Sailor than a non-rapist? She must! Why else would she suggest that those victimized be removed from service instead of the criminals? THAT IS SICK!!! She demonstrates in her commentary that she clearly has no understanding of how our military operates today, or what is best for those in uniform.
I could honestly go on and on regarding her disgusting, inflammatory remarks but am seriously so upset right now I feel it best I put this down and go to bed... I am certain my letter will not be the only you receive and hope that our joint efforts will be enough to have this horrible woman removed permanently from your broadcast. If not, I will certainly resume my argument where I am now leaving it off... And you can consider my TV tuned to any channel BUT Fox until she is gone!
Thank you for your time and diligence in looking into this matter,
