We the attendees of The Governors Ball Music Festival feel that having children under 18 years of age attend the festival is creating an increasingly toxic & hazardous environment with each passing year. We are asking that an age restriction of 18 years and above needs to be put into place.
We feel that despite consistent complaints, Founders Entertainment and LiveNation continue to ignore the problem of rampant underage drinking/drug usage at their festival. For years this problem has ruined the experience of other attendees and caused serious safety concerns. Year after year children have become overly intoxicated in public/residential areas surrounding the festival, they have caused medical issues within the crowd, and fights within the audience.
This year specifically the underage problem has reached a tipping point, where property was destroyed and a near riot ensued. All of this happened during an emergency evacuation, taking security and staff's focus away from the safety of all other attendees who were attempting to exit the festival grounds.
We understand that Gov Ball has wanted to make the festival 'all ages' in order to cater to more than just one demographic. However, the safety and experience of all festival attendees should be of the utmost importance. This one age group ruins the experience of others, and continues to cause safety issues. Therefore it is time for an age restriction.
Electric Zoo is another festival which takes place at the same venue of Randalls Island Park, and have implemented a similar age restriction years ago to great effect. They have proven that this can and is the responsible thing that should be done.
We are asking that either Founders Entertainment institute a similar policy for The Governors Ball Music Festival, or the city of NYC steps in and forces their hand.
