Dear mayor of Fortaleza, my name is Caio Vieira Cajazeiras and with me are my colleagues Murilo Rodrigues Maia, Camila Azevedo do Vale Santiago and Nícolas Aguiar Ribeiro de Carvalho. We’re students from IFCE (Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Ceará - Campus Fortaleza) and we live in the Fortaleza city.

Unfortunately, we noticed in our city a real negligence in relation to the preservation of the largest green area in the city: Parque do Cocó. The lack of effective surveillance work causes a series of scenarios amidst areas of destruction and pollution. An example that highlights this difficult situation was the fire that spread through the park with criminal causes. Fortunately, in this case, the fire did not reach a very significant distance. These episodes are to let you know that there are issues to be resolved. Soon we need the security of the park to be reinforced. 

The system against fires in cocó needs to be improved.  Investing in new ways of protecting our park is the reason this petition is here. We want to make Parque do Cocó safer by putting a better fire protection system, so we can take out fires before they turn into a big problem. We can see on the news that there was a fire that burned 46,2 hectares of forest and killed a lot of unique especies of animals and plants from that park. Not only is nature in danger, but our own health too, the fires let out an enormous amount of smoke that potentially can make people sick and overload the hospitals just like the coronavirus pandemic. If this get a lot of support, we will try to make this improvement real and the benefits will be great.

Well, the Cocó’s Park is the biggest green territory of Fortaleza, so recover and maintain your biodiversity is of major importance to balance the wellness operation of ecosystems with the human lifestyle, in view of that it contains 346 tree species, seven of which exclusives, that serve as primary source of the food chain and habitat for many animals that lives there, besides to keep a constant CO2 capture of the city and consequently stable local climate and  offer a leisure space and contact with nature for people as picnics, nature trails, boat ride and etc.
