Snow Day Policy

Snow Day Policy
Why this petition matters
A change in Missouri State Law restructured the way that the school year is calculated by the state. Currently, the State measures the school year in hours instead of measuring the old system in days. State law requires that students have to attend school for 1,044 hours. In the old system, the school district made up snow days to meet the state's requirement for total days, but make up days are unnecessary because the district far exceeds the hourly requirement of the state of Missouri.
There is minimal academic benefit to making up snow days because EOC and AP testing dates do not change as a result of snow days, thus teachers have to adjust to a shorter time frame for teaching the curriculum. Tacking snow days to the end of the school year does not provide any more flexibility in covering the curriculum.
The school district would stand to save money on transportation, wages of hourly employees, and utility costs which would benefit tax payers. Teachers could use the additional days in their contract to engage in professional development and prepare for next school year.
