Oasis Equine Assisted Therapy Stable is veteran owned and operated charity organization. The stable will be located at 19600 Oasis Drive, Phillipsburg, Missouri 65722, and provides services to neighboring Pulaski, Camden, Laclede, and Miller Counties. Oasis Equine Assisted Therapy Stable is new organization, and the only one of its kind supporting the Fort Leonard Wood area. The closest facility to provide Equine Assisted Therapy is over 100 miles from the Ft Leonard Wood area. This will allow Veterans in the surrounding area, to attend equine therapy without having to travel a far distance. This in turn will facilitate more therapeutic services to the community. These unique services will provide the local community with an alternative type of therapy, which is greatly beneficial to Veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Equine Assisted Therapy is an experiential treatment that can provide psychosocial and vocational transitional skill building for the military veteran population, especially for those who acquired a disability in the service. The presence of the horse helps to reflect individuals’ actions in the moment and provides instant feedback on how they are being perceived by others. The facilitator helps translate feedback the horse is giving, and prompts the client to think about his or her preconceived ideas about relationships, leadership, and communication (PATH, 2015; Strozzi, 2004). Equine Assisted Therapy provides many benefits to the veteran, some of these are: assertiveness, emotional awareness, empathy, stress tolerance, impulse control, problem-solving skills, self- actualization, independence, post-traumatic stress, and building of interpersonal relationships.
We will provide services to veterans of all services who suffer from PTSD. Through working with horses, veterans will regain the confidence they need to build coping mechanisms to manage their PTSD in the future. Our onsite Equine Therapist and staff guide veterans through a 3 month course that rejuvenates a sense of confidence, provides faith and non-faith based therapeutic treatment for PTSD, and provides tangible skills for veterans to pursue employment on a ranch following the program. We anticipate providing services to 160 veterans a year during the first year starting in 2025, 240 during the second year, and 320 during the third year in operation.
Volunteers will also be accepted within the community to help facilitate the needs of the program. We will specifically look for volunteers from faith organizations and local veteran programs.
