PETITION TO : — CONSERVATOR FORESTRY COMMISSION SCOTLAND
PLEASE RESPECT LARGS LOCAL OPINION AND REJECT FORESTRY DEVELOPMENT IMMEDIATELY BEHIND OUR TOWN AND IN THE GRETA AND GOGO VALLEYS - AS STATED IN THE SAVE THE GRETAS RESPONSE TO THE EIA CONSULTATION – APRIL 2018
In 2016 A new owner planned one of the largest new forests in Southern Scotland on the hills and valleys behind Largs. The original proposal was not accepted by Forestry Commission Scotland after a large number of objections to the plan. As a result the overall planting plan has now been reduced to 5 square kilometres and is now out for further consultation until 18th April. It does however still propose planting along the hilltops & hillside immediately behind the town and up the Gogo Valley as well as on a large area east and south of the Greta and Gogo burns.
The Gretas* have already suffered significantly from the activity to build two hydro stations on Halkshill and the proposed level of forestry development would further detract from this popular area in Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park.
We therefore request that planting be restricted to an area East of the Greeto Burn and keep the South bank of the Gogo valley tree free below the Gogo/Greeto "Meeting of the Waters".
This would reduce the number of trees overall but would still allow the developers to benefit significantly from Government Planting Grants and Commercial logging in the future.
* The GRETAS is a name fondly used by locals to refer to the Gogo Valley and hillside straddling the farm track which runs from Bellsdale to the Greeto/Greta burn.
