Why this petition matters

Started by Kayode Ogunfeibo

The Nigerian Government of President  Mohammadu Buhari has effectively become a rogue government without any iota of respect for human rights, freedom of expression and the rule of law  which are enshrined in the Nigerian constitution.  It also has no respect for court decisions and orders and regularly disobeys them. The latest incident involves the well known Nigerian journalist Omoyele  Sowore of the online publication  Sahara  Reporters who was granted bail by a court in Nigeria but continued to be detained by the State Security Service. Eventually he was released on 5th December 2019, only to be re-arrested the following day by State security agents who invaded the court where he was appearing with his lawyers and disrupted the proceedings in an attempt to arrest him. He subsequently attended the offices of the Department of State Security in Abuja later that  day, where he was detained with no reasons given for his arrest and no charges filed against him. The Head of State President Muhammadu Buhari regularly visits the UK for medical treatment and the UK government should henceforth impose a travel ban on him and members of his government until he shows and demonstrates clear commitment to the respect for human rights and the rule of law in Nigeria.
