In the past few months, our nation has been forced to confront the racist murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and more. As members of the Fordham community, we must recognize that these are not random incidents but are consequences of systems rooted in racism. Our institution is a proud member of the New York community, specifically the Bronx community, where Black people make up a significant portion of the population. It is now more important than ever to support our Black neighbors who live in fear, every second of every day, that their names could be the next to occupy spaces on protest posters.

Several student organizations have already raised their voices to create awareness and raise funds to support organizations that address anti racist reformation, and are now calling on the administration to do the same. On May 30, 2020, our president, Father McShane released a statement pertaining to the death of George Floyd where he stated that the solutions for the problems we face “need to be owned by everyone, but especially by our leaders and those in positions of authority and influence.” We are, now, calling on the administration of Fordham University to exemplify their call to action by supporting their text with financial resources. As an act of solidarity with its Black students and neighbors, we urge the university to use its position of authority and influence to provide financial support to organizations that have been working tirelessly to combat racism in the United States. Many students at Fordham, in line with our Jesuit education, have already financially supported these institutions, and now we are calling on our university to stand with us.

We have listed a few options that  Fordham University should consider supporting:

Bronx Freedom Fund
Emergency Release Fund
BYB 100
Black Lives Matter
Black Feminist Project
Emergency fund to Feed Brooklynites
