Force companies to withdraw defaults on credit file incurred by COVID
Why this petition matters
COVID 19 hit the world hard, people couldn't work some like myself were not even entitled to furlough so had no income for 6 months. My new job i was supposed to start in the march postponed start dates due to covid as they couldnt train staff in groups etc. Even though my partner tried to help pay some of my bills plus the mortgage we couldn't pay them all so had to prioritise as we have children to feed. I started delivering to try and get some money in to be able to buy food. This meant that I could not pay the minimum payment on couple of credit accounts I had with companies. I called them and explained due to covid I had no job no real income and was told not to worry people all over the country are having the same issues. Ok so I relax a bit they were so helpful on the phone...little did I know they were going to wreck my credit history! My new job finally started in the August and I started paying almost double to catch up on the missed payments and interest i owed. I caught up and have not been in default or missed a payment since. My balances are almost clear. We have come to try and remortgage as our fixed rate is up and turns out the credit companies who were so helpful at the time and understood that covid had caused the issues had marked every single month as a default! And even though I am up to date, caught up fast and in a pretty good paying job and now stable since covid and have been for over a year the defaults during covid have made almost every single bank decline our remortgage! This is not fair and there are many people whose credit was affected by covid and nothing else and now have their whole credit file wrecked due to a pandemic and not a fault of their own.
So I am asking the government to step in and force credit companies to remove all defaults and missed payments from people's credit files that occurred during covid inclusive of and between march 2020 and December 2021 as this is roughly how long it takes for people to get back on track. A pandemic should not be allowed to wreck our lives going forward. We deserve to still be allowed a good chance at credit and decent mortgage rates etc. Our affordability should not be determined by what happened during COVID, it is nothing to do with the present situation. And it's cruel of credit companies to do this to us and remove future prospects of receiving credit from others and could push people towards pay day loans etc which can be even more dangerous for people.
